Braze Audience Sync: What It Covers, What It Doesn't

Based on Braze's public documentation as of October 20, 2026.
Braze Audience Sync is a good product — and now that Salesforce is acquiring Braze, it's also the reason nobody can tell you whether Data Cloud Ad Audiences is the go-forward Ad Studio replacement. Here's what it actually is, drawn from Braze's own documentation, so the comparison conversations can run on facts.
What it is
Audience Sync is a Canvas step — Canvas being Braze's journey builder. When a user enters the step in a journey, Braze syncs them (hashed) to a connected ad platform audience, for targeting, retargeting, suppression or lookalike seeding. Audience membership is driven by journey logic: users sync when they hit the step.
Destinations, per Braze's docs
Criteo · Facebook/Instagram · Google Ads/YouTube · Google DV360 · LinkedIn · Pinterest · Snapchat · The Trade Desk · TikTok.
Packaging matters: Google and Facebook are included for all Braze customers; every other destination requires Action Credits or the "Audience Sync Pro" add-on, which unlocks three destinations per purchase. Reach beyond the big two is a paid expansion, bought in threes.
Operating characteristics worth knowing
- Audience minimums vary by platform: ~1,000 users for Facebook and TikTok, 5,000 for Google to serve, 300 for LinkedIn, 100 for Pinterest, 500 for Criteo (20,000+ recommended).
- Audience count limits: up to 500 ad audiences on Facebook, 1,000 on Criteo and Snapchat, 400 on TikTok.
- Matching takes 24–48 hours depending on destination, and Braze receives no match confirmation back from partners — you verify audience health inside each ad platform.
- Platform quirks: DV360 needs its own OAuth connection and can't mix contact info with mobile ad IDs in one sync; The Trade Desk doesn't support phone numbers for EU audiences.
- Consent is on you: Braze recommends gating Canvas entry by opt-in attributes and removing revoked users via another sync step.
Where it's strong
Honest credit: for companies whose customer data lives in Braze, journey-triggered syncing is elegant — audience membership follows engagement behavior in real time. And its programmatic coverage (The Trade Desk, DV360, Criteo) reaches territory many activation tools skip.
What it doesn't do
- It requires your data to live in Braze. Audience Sync is not a standalone activation product; it's a feature of the Braze engagement platform. For a Marketing Cloud customer, it offers nothing until you've re-platformed your engagement stack — a 12–18 month project.
- Audience management is journey-coupled. Audiences exist as side effects of Canvas steps, not as a managed inventory. Teams running hundreds of standing audiences with suppression discipline manage that differently.
- Destination gaps: no X, no Amazon Ads, no Microsoft Ads, no ChatGPT Ads, no Spotify, no Reddit in the documented partner list. (Fairness requires the mirror image: Cezium doesn't cover The Trade Desk, DV360 or Criteo today — the two products lean toward different halves of the destination map.)
- No feedback loop: without match confirmations, audience health monitoring happens platform by platform.
What this means in the acquisition context
Audience Sync existing — and working — is exactly why "migrate to Data Cloud Ad Audiences at $2,400 per audience per year" stopped being an obviously safe instruction on October 20. Salesforce now owns both. Which one survives rationalization is unannounced, and the integration roadmap won't exist until after the close in fiscal 2028. The full argument for waiting.
For Marketing Cloud customers, the practical line: Audience Sync is not your Ad Studio replacement today, because your data isn't in Braze. Your replacement question has to be answered inside SFMC — which is what Cezium Ads does, with your data extensions and journeys, while the platform question stays open as long as you need.
Frequently asked questions
Is Braze Audience Sync replacing Data Cloud Ad Audiences?
Unannounced. Salesforce owns both as of the acquisition's close; the press release is silent on rationalization. Ask your AE for a written position — and expect not to get one for several quarters.
Can I use Braze Audience Sync without migrating to Braze?
No. It syncs users from Braze journeys (Canvas). Your audience data has to be in Braze for it to have anything to sync.
How does it compare to Cezium Ads?
Different homes, overlapping destinations. Audience Sync: Braze-native, journey-step-driven, strong programmatic coverage, destinations beyond Google/Facebook sold in packs of three. Cezium Ads: SFMC-native, managed audience inventory from any data extension or journey, twelve destinations including X, Amazon, Microsoft, ChatGPT, Spotify and Reddit, flat pricing. If your stack is Marketing Cloud, the comparison is mostly theoretical until you re-platform.
