Hold steady — freeze, run, collect: keep SFMC campaigns running while Salesforce reorganizes

The rational response to the Braze acquisition is not to leave Marketing Cloud, and not to double down on it either. It's a holding pattern: keep every campaign running, freeze new platform commitments, and collect written answers until Salesforce's roadmap exists. Done right, the holding pattern costs almost nothing and preserves every option. Here's the playbook.

Why a holding pattern, not a migration

The acquisition closes in Salesforce's fiscal 2028 (February 2027 – January 2028). Product rationalization decisions come after that. So the earliest date you could make a fully informed platform decision is somewhere in 2027 — and any decision made before it is a bet on an unannounced roadmap.

Enterprises know how to wait; what they're bad at is waiting operationally — keeping the machine running while the strategy question stays open. That's the actual work.

What to freeze

What must keep running (and how)

Your campaigns don't get to wait. The operational requirements through the holding pattern:

  • Email and journeys: unchanged — Marketing Cloud Engagement works today and nothing announced changes that.
  • Ad audiences: this is the exposed piece, because the Ad Studio line drops at your renewal whether or not you've made a platform decision. Cezium Ads keeps audiences running natively in Marketing Cloud — same data extensions, same journeys, same team, no Data Cloud project — which is precisely what makes the holding pattern possible: your advertising never becomes the hostage that forces an early platform decision.
  • Measurement and consent: keep them where they are. Migrations during vendor uncertainty multiply risk for zero gain.

What to collect at every touchpoint

The holding pattern is an intelligence-gathering posture. At each renewal, QBR or AE conversation, get positions in writing:

  • Which ad-activation product is go-forward — Data Cloud Ad Audiences or Braze Audience Sync?
  • What is the roadmap commitment for Marketing Cloud Engagement beyond fiscal 2028?
  • If I buy a product that is later rationalized, what happens to fees paid and work done?
  • What price protections apply through the integration period?

A vendor mid-acquisition will resist written commitments. Fine — every refusal is also information, and it all strengthens your position at the next renewal.

The four-quarter calendar

  • Q4 2026: stabilize. Handle your co-term renewal (the Ad Studio line drops — have the replacement live first). Ask the questions above; file the answers.
  • Q1 2027: watch. Integration signals start appearing — org changes, event announcements, early packaging moves. No decisions yet.
  • Q2–Q3 2027: the close approaches; real roadmap statements begin. Now evaluation is worth the effort: run it with facts instead of projections.
  • Q4 2027 onward: decide — more Data Cloud, Braze, or something else — with the roadmap in writing and your audiences portable either way.

Frequently asked questions

Isn't waiting risky too?

Waiting with operations running is the lowest-risk position available. The risky version of waiting is paralysis — campaigns degrading because the Ad Studio line dropped before a replacement was live. Separate the operational fix (now) from the platform decision (2027) and both get easier.

What does the holding pattern cost?

Roughly the cost of keeping your audience operations independent of the retiring product — a Cezium contract is typically a fraction of a Data Cloud migration, and unlike the migration, none of it is stranded whatever you decide later.

What breaks if we do nothing at all?

One thing, on a date: your ad audiences, at your Marketing Cloud renewal, when the Ad Studio line comes off the order form. Everything else keeps working. That's why the audience fix is the one move that can't wait for the roadmap.
