First to ChatGPT — SFMC audiences in ChatGPT Ads: custom audiences, 25k minimum, auto-refresh, a Salesforce-ecosystem first

Some destination launches are about parity. LinkedIn was. Some are about coverage. Amazon and Microsoft were. This one is about being early to the most interesting new ad surface since social feeds existed.

Cezium Ads now activates SFMC audiences to ChatGPT Ads — generally available, in all plans, at no extra cost. To our knowledge, no other platform in the Salesforce ecosystem does this: not Advertising Studio (frozen since before ChatGPT existed as an ad channel), not Data Cloud Ad Audiences, not any AppExchange alternative. If your organization wants its first-party data working inside ChatGPT, as of today the path runs through Marketing Cloud — the system your customer data already lives in.

What ChatGPT Ads is (the one-paragraph version)

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the U.S. in February 2026 and has been rolling them out across markets since — clearly labeled sponsored placements shown to Free and Go-tier users, matched to the conversation's topic, deliberately kept away from sensitive subjects. Under the consumer-facing simplicity sits a real ads platform: campaign objectives (CPM, CPC, and conversion-optimized oCPC), a relevance-weighted auction, a measurement pixel and Conversions API — and, crucially for us, advertiser-uploaded custom audiences: hashed email and phone lists, usable for inclusion, exclusion, and bid adjustment. We've published a full explainer alongside this launch: What advertising on ChatGPT actually is — formats, auction, minimums, and where CRM data fits.

That last feature is the door Cezium walks through. Custom audiences on ChatGPT work the way they work everywhere else — your first-party identifiers, hashed and matched — which means everything your team already does in Cezium extends there natively: Data Extensions as sources, consent filtering inside SFMC, hashing before anything leaves Salesforce, multi-source audiences, journey control.

One platform quirk, and why automation happens to fix it

ChatGPT Ads has a constraint worth knowing: audience lists are immutable — they cannot be edited after creation. For a team managing uploads by hand, that means every refresh is a re-upload, a re-attach, and a housekeeping problem; in practice, manual lists go stale the day they're created and stay that way.

Cezium handles refresh on immutable-list platforms the only sane way: automatically recreating and swapping lists as your source Data Extensions change, so campaigns always reference current data without anyone touching a file. We mention this not as a feature boast but because it changes what's practical: on ChatGPT, maintained audiences are effectively an automation-only capability. Manual advertisers have static lists; your audiences move with your CRM.

What to actually run there (a candid starter plan)

New surfaces reward discipline over enthusiasm. Three notes from us before you spend:

  • Start with exclusion. Suppressing existing customers from ChatGPT acquisition campaigns is the zero-regret first move — it makes every impression net-new by construction, on inventory where you're still learning what works.
  • Mind the match threshold. ChatGPT audiences require a minimum matched size (25,000, with OpenAI recommending 100,000+), which makes this a destination for your large segments — full customer bases, lapsed-buyer files, newsletter universes — not your micro-segments. Multi-source audiences in Cezium help here: combine DEs to clear the bar.
  • Treat it as a test cell with real reporting. Conversion tracking via pixel and API is young but functional. Size a modest budget, measure against your other channels, and let the data — not the novelty — decide the second budget.

Being first to a channel is only worth something if you're also honest about its maturity. ChatGPT Ads is early: formats will change, markets are still opening, and best practices are being written by the people testing now. That is exactly the argument for testing with suppression hygiene and CRM-grade audiences from day one — early-channel spend is the spend that can least afford to hit your own customers.

Ecosystem note

For SFMC teams mid-flight on an Ad Studio migration, nothing about this launch changes your calendar — ChatGPT is additive, not a migration dependency. But it does sharpen the larger point of this whole run-off year: the difference between a frozen platform and a living one is that one of them shows up to new channels. Ad Studio never got TikTok. Its successor doesn't have TikTok either — or X, or Pinterest, or Microsoft, or this. Eleven destinations now. One more next week.

Frequently asked questions

Can you advertise on ChatGPT with first-party audiences?

Yes. ChatGPT Ads supports advertiser-uploaded custom audiences (hashed emails/phones) for inclusion, exclusion, and bid adjustment, with a 25,000 matched-user minimum. Cezium Ads builds these from SFMC Data Extensions automatically.

Is Cezium the first Salesforce-ecosystem platform to support ChatGPT Ads?

To our knowledge, yes — as of October 12, 2026, no Salesforce product or AppExchange alternative offers native SFMC-audience activation to ChatGPT Ads.

How does audience refresh work if ChatGPT lists can't be edited?

Cezium recreates and swaps lists automatically as source Data Extensions change, so campaigns always run on current data — the platform's immutability constraint is handled invisibly.

Where do ChatGPT ads appear, and to whom?

In clearly labeled placements within conversations for Free and Go-tier users, in OpenAI's launched markets, away from sensitive topics. Paid tiers (Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu) see no ads.
