Sometime in the last year, you sat through the renewal conversation. Salesforce explained that Advertising Studio was retiring, that renewals would close on August 15, 2026, and that the future was Data Cloud Ad Audiences. And you did the thing that a surprising number of SFMC customers did: you took one last Ad Studio renewal and declined the Data Cloud migration.

Let us start by saying this out loud, because you will not hear it from many vendors: that was a rational decision. Standing up Data Cloud is not a like-for-like swap for Ad Studio. It means provisioning a platform, connecting sources, configuring identity resolution and consent, rebuilding every segment, licensing the Ad Audiences add-on on top — and, for multi-brand organizations, doing much of it once per Data Space. Declining to run that program on Salesforce's timetable, mid-fiscal-year, under deadline pressure, in exchange for keeping a tool that already works? Rational. You bought time, and time is exactly what a good migration needs.

Now comes the part that requires equal honesty about what you bought.

What the renewal bought — and what it didn't

The renewal bought continuity: your audiences keep syncing, your journeys keep firing, your suppression lists keep suppressing, until your new term-end date.

It did not buy a future. Two things are true about the contract you signed:

The product is frozen. Ad Studio's platform list was completed years ago, and every gap in it is now permanent:

Whatever your media plan looks like in the final year of your term, Ad Studio will support exactly what it supports today.

There is no next renewal. This is the structural difference between your last renewal and every renewal before it. Previously, the default at term end was continuation. Now the default at term end is termination, and no alternative default exists. You did not renew a subscription; you signed a run-off contract with a fixed endpoint. The question is no longer whether you migrate, only when and under whose control.

The trap is not the deadline. It's the waiting.

Teams that renewed tend to file the migration under "later." Here is what "later" costs, concretely:

Knowledge decays. Your Ad Studio setup is held together by institutional memory: which Data Extension feeds which audience, which automation refreshes it, where the consent field lives, why that one audience has been in error state since 2024. The people who hold that memory change jobs. Every quarter you wait, your future migration inherits more archaeology and less knowledge.

The pressure doesn't stop. You said no to Data Cloud once. You will be asked again at every QBR between now and your term end — and the later it gets, the more the conversation tilts, because a team with eight months left and no plan has far less negotiating room than a team with a working alternative already running.

Your end date will land at the worst time. Term ends do not schedule themselves around your marketing calendar. If yours falls in Q4 or Q1, your forced-march scenario runs through BFCM or year-end planning. The whole point of renewing was to avoid migrating under pressure; waiting recreates the pressure with a later date on it.

The 90-day plan

None of this requires migrating now. It requires starting now. Ninety days, three phases, none of them disruptive:

Days 1–30: Write things down.

  • Put your term-end date in the shared marketing calendar, visibly, this week — not in a contract folder, in the calendar.
  • Run the audience inventory while the people who built the setup are still in the building: every active audience, its source Data Extension and folder path, its refresh automation, its destination and ad account, its destination audience ID, its segmentation criteria, its consent field, its owner. (Ad Studio gives you no export for this; our free inventory template in the Migration Kit gives you the exact columns.)
  • Name a business sponsor for the eventual migration.

Total cost: a few person-days. Value at cutover time: enormous.

Days 31–60: Run something in parallel — on the gaps, not the overlap. The elegant property of your situation is that you do not need to touch anything that works. Pick a use case Ad Studio cannot do and run it on the replacement platform: a TikTok audience from an existing Data Extension, a LINE activation for an APAC brand, a journey audience you want reusable across campaigns. With consumption-based pricing you pay per audience pushed — no annual commitment, no migration, no risk to the running setup. You get real match rates, real volumes, and a real evaluation, funded by incremental campaigns your current tool couldn't serve anyway.

Days 61–90: Mirror the top of the pyramid. Take your ten to twenty most important audiences — the big suppressions and the core retargeting segments — and mirror them on the parallel platform, same source Data Extensions, both syncing. Now compare: match rates, refresh latency, workflow. Write down your cutover criteria and a provisional cutover quarter, well inside your term. From that point on, your migration is a scheduling decision, not a project — and every future QBR conversation happens with a working alternative behind you.

Frequently asked questions

We renewed Ad Studio before August 15 — until when can we use it?

Until the end date of the term you signed. Renewals taken before the August 15, 2026 freeze run their full length; at that end date there is no further renewal for anyone, at any price.

Should we migrate to Data Cloud Ad Audiences since we have time?

Time is an argument for evaluating calmly, not for defaulting. Data Cloud Ad Audiences is a platform migration (with a platform cost) and its destination list omits X, Pinterest, and TikTok. Run a parallel evaluation on your own data before committing either way.

What should a renewed Ad Studio customer do first?

Three things, in order: record your term-end date somewhere the whole team sees it, complete an audience inventory while institutional knowledge is intact, and start one parallel use case — ideally on a destination Ad Studio doesn't support — to evaluate your replacement with real data.

Can we run Ad Studio and a replacement platform at the same time?

Yes, and it is the recommended pattern. Both can sync audiences from the same Data Extensions simultaneously, which lets you compare match rates and volumes with zero risk to running campaigns.

The quiet advantage

Do this, and something subtle changes: the run-off clock stops being Salesforce's clock and becomes yours. You cut over when the numbers say so — after BFCM instead of during it, in a quiet quarter, with audiences already validated and destination audience IDs already preserved. That is what the renewal money actually bought, if you spend it: not two more years of Ad Studio, but the only unhurried migration anyone in this ecosystem is going to get.

Cezium Ads is built for exactly this parallel run: AppExchange-native, reading the same Data Extensions and Journey audiences Ad Studio reads, pushing to seven platforms including the ones Ad Studio never got, on a Starter plan priced per audience pushed. Start with the gap use case. Keep Ad Studio running. Decide with data.
